“Israel pressures Russia on arms sales, Iran”
May 20-June 3, 2009
Steve Gutterman reports that Israel is “angered” over Russia’s unchanging public position on Iran and engagement with Hamas. While Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised US efforts to engage Iran and urged Iran to cooperate, Gutterman points out there were no indications Russia would increase pressure against Tehran (Associated Press). Press TV declares that Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman “failed” to gain Russian support against Iran (Press TV).
However, Russia has halted plans to sell its S-300 air defense systems to Iran (Agence France-Presse). Russia has also cancelled the sale of MiG-31 fighter jets to Syria, reportedly in exchange for Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), which are being sold on the condition that Russia does not provide anti-aircraft systems to Iran or Syria (Jerusalem Post). The MiG-31 sale was suspected of being an indirect purchase for Iran. Syria claims the sale has not been cancelled (Reuters).
