“Israel seeking Arab cooperation against Iran”

“Israel seeking Arab cooperation against Iran”
May 11-13, 2009
Mort Zuckerman writes that Arab states and Israel may be compelled to shift priorities from the Palestinian issue to unite against Iran, citing Arab-Iran tensions in Egypt and Lebanon (Huffington Post). However, in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Egypt, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak insisted on the need for progress on the Palestinian issue and added that Egypt views the Iranian threat differently (Associated Press). Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal also stressed the Palestinian issue as a priority (Zawya).
Ephraim Asculai believes that Arab states are often unable to make opposition to Iran official policy despite long-standing enmity (Xinhua). However, Gamal Abdel Gawad states there is genuine suspicion in Cairo that Israel is attempting to shift attention away from the Palestinian issue, which Gawad argues remains a condition for Arab cooperation with Israel (Jerusalem Post).
