“Efforts to draw Syria from Iran remain difficult”

     During a visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad reaffirmed Syria’s alliance with Iran and its support for Iran’s nuclear program (Reuters). Although the visit was followed by the arrival of US Undersecretary of State for Near East Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, who expressed hope for further US-Syria dialogue (Xinhua), the US subsequently renewed sanctions against Syria (Reuters (2)).
     Regarding efforts to draw Damascus away from Tehran, Andrew Lee Butters points out that Syria opposes any peace deal with Israel at the expense of its relations with Iran, while Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has pledged not to cede the Golan Heights (Time). Jonathan Spyer believes the Iran-Syria alliance is strong and based not on convenience but on shared interests and resistance against Western states and Israel (Jerusalem Post).
