“US soothes Egypt and Saudi Arabia over Iran”

“US soothes Egypt and Saudi Arabia over Iran”
May 4 & 5, 2009
Marc Lynch reports that US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’ visits to Egypt and Saudi Arabia to soothe suspicions over US engagement with Iran are being received well by the Arab states. However, Lynch is concerned that Gates may be hurting actual chances for negotiations with Iran by expressing strong skepticism over future Iran-US relations (Foreign Policy).
Gary Sick points out that Cairo and Riyadh should not assume that a US-Iran relationship is mutually exclusive with US-Arab relations. Sick also believes that Cairo’s main insecurity is that, despite its “complicity” with Israel, Tehran’s open antagonism toward Israel is popular among the Egyptian population (The National).
