“Credibility of Israeli warnings questioned”

“Credibility of Israeli warnings questioned”
May 4 & 5, 2008
Amir Oren writes that Israel’s warnings of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, as well as its threats of preemptive strikes, have lost credibility. Oren argues that, due to ambiguity over whether Israeli leaders truly consider a nuclear Iran an “existential threat”, Israel’s attempts to deter Iran and pressure other states to resolve the issue have failed (Haaretz).
Amid criticism that Israel is using concern over Iran to turn international attention away from the Palestinian issue (Daily Times), the Jerusalem Post stresses that Iran remains “the overriding threat…to Israel, the Arabs and the West.” The editorial argues that a withdrawal by Israel to its 1949 borders would neither quell Iran’s regional and nuclear ambitions nor satisfy Palestinian demands (Jerusalem Post).
